Plogging with the Akron Marathon

Did you know there are 35 billion pieces of litter in America? We can make our community a cleaner place by doing our part but also go the extra mile by picking up our streets. We commit to this by plogging after each event in the Akron Marathon Race Series. Not only do we want to leave the space we use better than we found it, but we also want to make the streets we live, work, and play on the best they can be.

What is plogging? A combination of the Sweedish term “plocka upp” which means to pick up and the act of jogging. Plogging is the act of picking up litter while you run, jog, or walk. It’s easy to incorporate it into your training routine and it makes a big impact!

What do I need? A bag to collect litter and gloves are ideal. If you come plogging with us, our friends at Keep Akron Beautiful take care of all the supplies for you. Just come ready to run, walk, or jog and pick up litter.

Do I have to run? Can I still run? Plogging is designed to be at your own pace. If you are either moving or picking up litter, you are plogging. Each plog lasts about an hour and you will cover 1-to-2 miles on a pre-planned route. We recommend plogging with a buddy within our group and to move at your own pace. Going longer than two miles? Think of your plog as a warm-up, drop your bag at the end, and keep on going.
