Akron, OH (April 30, 2019) — The Akron Marathon Charitable Corporation announced its need for volunteers for the 2019 Akron Children’s Hospital Akron Marathon Race Series.

This year, the Akron Marathon team plans to engage more than 2,000 volunteers across its 2019 events, beginning with opportunities in June, for the National Interstate 8K & 1 Mile, Goodyear Half Marathon & 10K in August, and the FirstEnergy Akron Marathon, Half Marathon & Team Relay in September.

The Race Series is a great opportunity to earn volunteer hours. “For years, the teenagers from the PeaceMakers (an Akron-based organization that supports local high school students in building character and developing leadership skills) look forward to volunteering with the Marathon team,” shares Willa Keith, Community Liaison Officer, City of Akron. “This Marathon highlights Akron, and we hope all of our residents, including our youth, join us and get to feel the welcoming spirit of our city.”

Volunteers for the Akron Children’s Hospital Akron Marathon Race Series are given an opportunity to make a significant contribution to the community, meet new people, share their skills and talents, and help make the races a successful experience for runners, their supporters, spectators and the entire City of Akron.

“Our events run so smoothly because our community rallies around the Akron Marathon and the runners we welcome to our City,” states Katie Riley, project manager, Akron Marathon Charitable Corporation. “We’re so thankful to our returning volunteers—and those joining us for the very first time. It’s going to be another incredible year.”

From individual support to groups of all sizes—including corporate support, like that of Akron Children’s Hospital, the Akron Marathon Race Series’ title beneficiary—volunteers can help across a number of diverse capacities.

In 2018, 50 employees from Akron Children’s Hospital donated more than 220 hours of support during the race season.

“Whether Akron Children’s employees are volunteering at the hospital’s hero zone or providing water to runners during a race, our employees look forward to lending a hand every year,” said Shawn Lyden, chief strategy officer at Akron Children’s. “It’s a great way to give back and be part of these world-class running events.”

According to Riley, volunteer benefits include a commemorative volunteer t-shirt and gift. “Most importantly, our volunteers will know that they’re a huge part of these world-class events in our community,” added Riley.
