AKRON, OH (June 4, 2025) – The Akron Marathon Charitable Corporation is proud to announce that Olympic gold medalist and Akron native Butch Reynolds has been selected as the 2025 Ambassador Award recipient. This prestigious honor will be presented during the 23rd annual FirstEnergy Akron Marathon weekend as the organization celebrates not only the power of running, but also Akron’s Bicentennial and those who have helped shape its legacy. Reynolds, who is the subject of the award-winning ESPN 30 for 30 Documentary “False Positive,” continues to inspire through his athletic achievements and unwavering commitment to the community.
Reynolds, a world-record holder, gold medalist in the 4×400 relay, and silver medalist in the 400 meters at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, is celebrated both for his elite athletic accomplishments and his commitment to empowering youth through health, wellness, and education. His lasting impact as a mentor and community advocate has made him an icon in Akron and beyond.
“Reynolds is more than a champion on the track, he’s a champion for the people of Akron,” said Jeannine Marks, race founder and board chair of the Akron Marathon Charitable Corporation. “In this historic year for our city, we are thrilled to honor someone whose personal and professional journey embodies the spirit, resilience, and pride of Akron.”
The Ambassador Award is presented annually to an individual who has made significant contributions and lasting impact on the sport of running. This award honors those who inspire others to run through their commitment and enthusiasm.
Reynolds will be honored at the annual Akron Marathon Kickoff Event & VIP Party on Wednesday, Sept. 24. The invitation-only celebration will bring together community leaders, sponsors, and supporters.
“I was at the inaugural Kids Fun Run, and I’m honored to come back home to Akron for this special weekend,” said Reynolds. “It means so much to be recognized by my hometown and to once again help promote health and wellness to our youth, especially during Akron’s Bicentennial. I can’t wait to celebrate with this amazing community.”
In addition to the VIP reception, Reynolds will be on-site throughout marathon weekend:
Friday, Sept. 26
- Meet fans at the Health & Fitness Expo presented by the Akron Area YMCA at the John S. Knight Center
- Serve as the honorary starter for The Mandel Family Kids Fun Run presented by Akron Children’s Hospital
Saturday, Sept. 27
- Kick off the FirstEnergy Akron Marathon, Half Marathon & Team Relay and participate in the post-race awards ceremonies
This year’s event promises to be one of the most memorable yet, with plenty to celebrate. We look forward to honoring Reynolds for his lasting legacy, commemorating Akron’s historic Bicentennial, unveiling a reimagined racecourse, and debuting an all-new finish line experience at Lock 3. It’s a milestone year that blends tradition with transformation, and the Akron Marathon Charitable Corporation looks forward to celebrating alongside the community every step of the way.
